Danger grows as pothole worsens on R68 route to N11

Motorists fear disaster as massive pothole threatens safety on the R68 near Dundee.

There is growing concern over the condition of the R68 route to the N11, commonly referred to as the Sunset Rest road.

Regular commuters who contacted the Courier say an “ever-expanding pothole” under the railway bridge — between the Hattingspruit and Glencoe turn-offs — now poses a serious hazard.

Water from a nearby settlement frequently flows onto the road and accumulates in the pothole.

“Anyone driving at night won’t see the pothole until it’s too late. It’s in the middle of the road and almost impossible to avoid,” said one motorist who travels the route daily.

Another driver, who damaged their vehicle’s oil sump in the same spot, fears the road surface may collapse entirely. This was the case with the Wasbank–Glencoe road, which was closed for three months while the Department of Transport carried out repairs.

The Courier contacted the local Department of Transport in Dundee, but officials stated the R68 falls under the Dannhauser office. Although officials inspected the deteriorating road surface, no timeline for repairs has been provided.
