NFP demands urgent probe into Nquthu RDP housing scandal

NFP demands action as illegal sales and unlawful occupation of RDP houses spark growing concerns in Nquthu.

The National Freedom Party (NFP) in KwaZulu-Natal has called for an urgent and thorough investigation into alleged criminal activities at the Mpumelelweni RDP Housing Settlement in Ward 14, Nquthu.

The party is urging the Department of Transport and Human Settlements, led by MEC Siboniso Duma, to act swiftly in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, community policing forums and other oversight bodies.

“While we note some departmental efforts to address this critical issue, we believe stronger and more co-ordinated action is needed,” said NFP provincial deputy secretary Zithembe Ngobese.

According to the NFP’s preliminary investigation, several irregularities have surfaced, including:

  • RDP houses allegedly sold to people who do not meet eligibility criteria;

  • Illegal occupation by foreign nationals, with growing allegations of criminal activities linked to these occupants;

  • The unlawful renting of RDP houses, which deprives qualifying residents of access to state-subsidised housing;

  • Alleged involvement of individuals in influential positions, pointing to deeper governance failures;

  • Unoccupied and deteriorating houses, with many beneficiaries untraceable.

Ngobese expressed concern, saying:
“Foreign nationals should not be allowed to occupy these houses at the expense of Nquthu citizens. The department must take decisive steps to dismantle these fraudulent practices and restore the integrity of the RDP programme.”

The NFP further urged the department to work with the Department of Home Affairs, Nquthu Municipality and traditional leaders to verify citizenship and beneficiary legitimacy, ensuring that only qualifying residents benefit.

“The people of Nquthu must not be deprived of their constitutional right to decent shelter and the right to belong,” Ngobese added.

The NFP reaffirmed its commitment to championing community rights and vowed to pursue the matter until it is fully resolved.
