Endumeni’s seasonal tariff decision deferred after high-level meeting

Seasonal electricity tariff debate postponed as exco to deliberate and public input sought.

Following a high-level meeting between members of the local business sector, Endumeni Mayor, Mcebo Mkhize,  councillors, and municipal officials, the municipality has, for now, relented on implementing seasonal electricity tariffs.

The tariffs that were reflected on August utility bills received by businesses (and schools and care centres) sent a shock wave throughout Dundee and Glencoe, with many businesses reporting increases of over 60% on their July bills.

Monday’s urgent meeting called for by the Endumeni Residents Association, Civic Association and the Chamber of Business was well attended.

For now, Willie Steenberg of the ERA said business owners are advised to pay the standard August electricity charges — excluding the inflated seasonal tariffs — until further notice or clarification is issued by the municipality.

Mayor Mkhize said the issue would be referred to the Executive Committee (Exco) for further analysis. From there, the matter will proceed to formal public consultation, ensuring that all stakeholders have the opportunity to provide input before any final decisions are made.
