Veteran Dundee goalkeeper Riaz Abdullah inspires with lifelong dedication to football

Veteran goalkeeper Riaz Abdullah inspires young and old by combining football success with mentorship and community impact.

Riaz Adam Abdullah, fondly known as Malume, is still proving his class between the posts on the football field.

Competing last Saturday in an over-50s tournament in Ladysmith — featuring strong teams from Durban, Ladysmith, Newcastle and Vryheid — Abdullah helped lead his side to victory. The veteran goalkeeper produced the best save of the competition to claim the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award, showing that class is permanent.

His latest heroics add to a lifetime of football achievements that span from provincial representation in the 1970s to professional stints in the 1980s — and now to inspiring a new generation through grass-roots coaching and senior football.

Abdullah’s journey began in 1976 when, as a determined teenager, he represented Northern Natal at junior and senior level. His natural instincts and confidence soon paved the way for a professional career.

In the 1980s, he became a familiar name in South African football, defending the nets for Bosmont Chelsea, Jakes Auto Lot Dundee, and Blue Bells Gauteng. His fearless style earned respect from teammates and fans alike.

Yet his true legacy extends beyond the matches. After his professional career, Abdullah turned to grass-roots development, coaching children and opening pathways for young talent. For him, the field became a classroom, each practice a lesson in discipline, teamwork and perseverance.

Even in his 60s, Abdullah still laces up his boots, representing Umzinyathi District Municipality at the Golden Games.

As a senior, Malume remains committed to playing, mentoring and sharing his love of the game. His story is not just about trophies, but about perseverance, discipline and community impact.

Riaz Adam Abdullah reminds us that football is more than 90 minutes — it is a lifelong journey, a source of unity, and a gift best shared with the youth.
