Commuter warns Dundee/Glencoe crossing is a death trap

Regular commuter calls for urgent safety measures at Dundee/Glencoe intersection after multiple accidents and a personal near-miss involving a truck.

Regular commuter Dillin Clarke has sounded the alarm over the notorious Dundee/Glencoe intersection, describing it as a “death trap” after a string of serious accidents.

Clarke was at the scene last Tuesday night when a motorist collided with a horse while approaching from the Ladysmith side.

“I stood with officers, paramedics, and breakdown drivers that night,” he recalled. “We spoke about the weekend accident involving the Isuzu and Polo at the same spot, and many others before that. I told them something has to change. We need safety measures — a robot, streetlights, or even bigger bumps from the Ladysmith side—otherwise someone is going to die here.”

Less than 12 hours later, Clarke narrowly escaped disaster at the same intersection. On his way from Glencoe to Dundee, a truck and trailer shot through the stop street just metres in front of him.

“Luckily, because of all these recent accidents, I drive that stretch with extreme caution, and my speed was low. If I had been doing the speed limit, I could have gone under that truck,” Clarke said.

The near miss has left him shaken and frustrated. “My question is: Would anything have been done if I had died? Would my family have been looked after? Or would it just be left like all the previous times?”

Clarke is calling for urgent intervention, warning that the community cannot afford more tragedies. “Something has to be done, and done ASAP!” he stressed.
