Stakeholders unite to fight stock theft in Umzinyathi
Stakeholders joined forces in Dundee to fight stock theft, share strategies, and strengthen partnerships across Umzinyathi District.
Efforts to curb stock theft in the Umzinyathi District gained momentum this week as the Department of Community Safety and Liaison convened a stakeholder workshop in Dundee. The session brought together law enforcement officials, farmers, community leaders, and government officials to strengthen collaboration in tackling one of the region’s most persistent crimes.
Opening the event, Boikie Sithole from the Department of Community Safety highlighted the importance of multi-sectoral involvement in combating stock theft. Dundee Rural Safety official, Sergeant Sabelo Buthelezi, stressed that the crime affects entire communities, not only farmers, and called for vigilance and collective action.
Mphakamiseni Mdlalose from the Dundee Court (NPA) outlined the role of prosecutors in securing convictions. At the same time, the Glencoe Stock Theft and Endangered Species (STES) Unit explained the use of Section 6 documents to regulate livestock movement.
District Rural Safety Coordinator, Lieutenant Colonel Siphelele Langa, presented statistics showing a decline in reported stock theft cases compared to last year, but noted that the Nhlanhleni policing area remains most affected.
The workshop drew wide participation, including representatives from the KZNCCPA, Endumeni Traffic, Agriculture, CPF structures, GBV activists, Msinga farmers and Isikebhe members. Constructive discussions allowed stakeholders to share knowledge and strategies, reaffirming their commitment to ongoing cooperation.
The forum concluded with a pledge to intensify partnerships, raise awareness and maintain pressure on stock theft syndicates in the district.
