Glencoe police host Heritage Day event to strengthen ties and tackle crime

Police and community leaders mark Heritage Day with a united stand against crime in Glencoe.

Glencoe South African Police Service (SAPS), in partnership with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, hosted a Heritage Day celebration and community engagement event on Wednesday, 24 September.

The day aimed to celebrate culture while strengthening partnerships and tackling ongoing crime concerns within the Glencoe policing precinct.

The Visible Policing (Vispol) commander opened the event by providing an overview of local crime trends. While property crimes have shown a decline compared to last year, issues such as theft, cable theft, and assault — many linked to liquor outlets — remain prevalent. Isithembile was identified as a crime hot-spot. Fraud, particularly online scams, was flagged as an emerging concern.

Speakers from various departments delivered strong messages throughout the day. The Department of Community Safety and Liaison emphasised the need to identify crime hot-spots and activate community structures. The Department of Health commended Glencoe SAPS for its sensitive handling of complex cases.

Community Policing Forum chairperson Lloyd Kgotshane called for unity in fighting crime, while the Sebenzakusakhanya Secondary School governing body thanked SAPS for swift responses to school-related incidents.

A pledge made to closely monitor crime trends

The station commander closed the programme by pledging to closely monitor crime trends and develop new safety strategies. She thanked all stakeholders for their ongoing support, including representatives from Transnet, Correctional Services, Dundee GBV activists, the Youth Crime Prevention Desk, the Department of Health and local schools.

A powerful sketch performance by local youth ended the day, driving home the message of crime awareness and the vital role of community involvement.

A special token of appreciation was presented to Miss Nkosi for her dedicated work with the CPF in addressing school-related crime.

The event successfully blended cultural celebration with a united commitment to building a safer Glencoe.
