Maskandi artist faces court over double murder charges

Maskandi artist Dlubheke Khuzwayo faces court after being charged with a double murder linked to a 2023 shooting.

Well-known Maskandi musician Dlubheke Khuzwayo has appeared in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court following his arrest in Durban in connection with a double murder linked to a 2023 shooting.

Shooting leaves two dead near Mpukunyoni

The charges stem from a November 13, 2023 incident, when four men travelling in a white vehicle from Ntinini, Babanango, were ambushed near Mpukunyoni.

“It is believed that the suspect, who was known to the victims, opened fire as the vehicle came to a stop,” said SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza.

The driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road. Two of the occupants managed to flee, while the remaining two died at the scene.

Khuzwayo, who entered the Maskandi music scene in 2009 at just 15 with his debut album Siqhathiwe Enquthu, quickly rose to fame as one of the genre’s most recognisable voices.

However, his musical success was later overshadowed by controversy and alleged links to faction-related violence in his village — a conflict that reportedly claimed at least 11 lives and forced him to flee his home in fear.

Khuzwayo remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
