Biggarsberg Cycle Challenge sets pace for future growth

The Biggarsberg Cycle Challenge drew over 100 riders to Dundee, earning praise for its organisation, scenic route and tourism boost.

The Biggarsberg Cycle Challenge in Dundee has been hailed as a major success, with organisers and participants agreeing that it has the potential to become one of KwaZulu-Natal’s premier cycling events.

Strong turnout and positive feedback

Held on 19 October, the event attracted 108 riders from across the province and beyond. The two-distance challenge – featuring 35km and 100km routes – drew praise from Hugo Weyers of SA Cycling and Angus MacFarlane of KZN Cycling, who commended the “brilliant route” through Glencoe, the Wasbank Valley and back to Talana Museum.

The event, which formed part of the Hills and Waves Cycle Series, was coordinated by Pam McFadden, Graham Peddie and a core team of Tourism Dundee volunteers.

McFadden said the race had run smoothly, with no serious injuries reported.

“We had wonderful co-operation from the Transport Department, which repaired the worst potholes, and from Endumeni Municipality and both the provincial and municipal traffic departments,” she said.
“It was great to see our B&Bs full for the weekend – a real boost for local businesses.”

Areas for improvement

Organisers discussed several points for future improvement, including additional marshal training, clearer road signage for motorists, and the inclusion of a podium for top finishers. The Traffic Department also requested an advance briefing before the next race.

Plans are underway to introduce a trophy for the best watering table, and organisers hope to secure support from the Department of Sport and Recreation next year.

“The only change we’ll make is the date – moving it earlier in October so it doesn’t clash with the Battle of Talana anniversary events,” said McFadden. “Overall, it was a wonderful event that strengthens Dundee’s growing sport tourism profile.”
