Japan donates ambulance to Duduza Care Centre to boost patient care
The Embassy of Japan donates an ambulance to Duduza Care Centre in Wasbank, helping improve care for vulnerable patients.
Joy and gratitude filled the air at Duduza Care Centre when the Embassy of Japan officially handed over a fully equipped ambulance during the centre’s 25th anniversary celebration.
The donation, made through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme, is a vital boost for the Wasbank-based hospice, which has provided compassionate care to vulnerable communities for 25 years.
A gift that transforms care
The new ambulance will allow staff to transport patients with safety and dignity — a major improvement for the rural mission-based organisation that previously relied on makeshift transport.
Two representatives from the Embassy of Japan, Muramoto Miyuki (Second Secretary, Economic and Development Section) and Nomthandazo Hoboyi, attended the event to present the vehicle on behalf of the people and government of Japan.
The day began with a solemn prayer at the old hospice in remembrance of those who died in the tragic 2007 fire, followed by a Holy Mass celebrated by Fr Zakhele Ziqubu and Fr Andrew Moyo, Vicar of the Bishop of the Diocese of Dundee.
In her address, Muramoto reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting grassroots projects across South Africa, noting that the embassy has implemented over 660 projects since 1990 through the GGP initiative.
“On behalf of the people and government of Japan, we are pleased to support Duduza Care Centre,” she said. “You are champions in palliative care, and through this gift, we encourage you to continue helping the weak and vulnerable.”
Director Sr Colette M Mthimkhulu expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation.
“In the past, we had to transport patients on the back of a bakkie. This ambulance changes everything,” she said.
Following the handover, the centre held its annual general meeting, highlighting achievements in palliative care, youth training and support for orphaned and vulnerable children.
The day concluded with joyous Silver Jubilee celebrations and an uplifting performance by gospel artist Thando Jobe.
Speaking on behalf of the Diocese, Fr Moyo praised Duduza Care Centre’s enduring mission.
“Duduza continues to embody faith, unity and selfless service to those in need,” he said.
