Endumeni celebrates culture as annual traditional event brings community together

Endumeni celebrates culture as residents gather in Wasbank for the annual traditional event.

The spirit of Ubuntu and cultural pride filled the Wasbank Hall on Saturday as Endumeni Local Municipality hosted its second Annual Traditional Event.

Despite a delayed start while VIPs arrived, the colourful celebration — led by Mayor Mcebo Mkhize in partnership with Mashiqa Media — drew hundreds of residents from Wasbank and neighbouring areas to honour the rich heritage of the Zulu nation.

The programme featured vibrant izinkondlo (poetry) and ingoma (traditional dance) performances, showcasing the community’s deep appreciation of culture and tradition.

In his address, Mayor Mkhize thanked participants and emphasised the importance of preserving culture as a foundation for unity, pride and social cohesion. He encouraged young people to embrace their roots and allow culture to guide their personal development and identity.

Community unites to honour heritage

She added that cultural education plays an essential role in shaping young people and addressing social challenges such as substance abuse.

“When our children understand and value where they come from, they gain purpose and direction. Culture is a powerful tool in steering them away from destructive behaviours like drug abuse,” she said.

Ward 1 Councillor TB Ngcobo also expressed gratitude to the community and Mashiqa Media for their support, praising the teamwork that made the event possible. He stressed that unity between residents and the municipality is vital for the success of local initiatives.

The event concluded with jubilant music, dance and celebration — marking another meaningful step by Endumeni Local Municipality to strengthen cultural identity and community unity.
