Red Saturday drive calls on Endumeni to help save lives

SANBS urges residents to donate on Red Saturday as Africa unites to tackle critical blood shortages.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) will join blood services across the continent for Red Saturday, a unified donation campaign on November 29. Endumeni residents can donate at the Dundee Boulevard Centre between 09:00 and 15:00.

“Red Saturday embodies African solidarity,” said Marike Carli, PR Manager at WCBS. “By donating blood, we strengthen the bonds that unite us.”

A continent speaks with one voice

The initiative spans South Africa, Namibia, Ghana, Ethiopia and Tanzania, encouraging both new and regular donors to help replenish critically low supplies that hospitals rely on daily.

SANBS Senior Manager for Marketing, Communication and Brand, Thandi Mosupye, said the campaign reflects a shared humanitarian mission: “The gift of blood is a shared act of humanity that transcends borders.”

Who can donate?

To donate, individuals must be 16–75 years old, weigh 50kg or more, be in good health, and maintain a safe sexual lifestyle.
The process takes about 30 minutes, and donors may give blood every 56 days. A light meal a few hours before donating and increased fluid intake are recommended.
