Burst pipe sends blood residue flowing onto Glencoe road

A burst pipe forced workers to divert blood seeping onto Boundary Road, alarming businesses in Glencoe.

An emergency diversion was created on Thursday morning to prevent blood from spilling across Boundary Road in Glencoe’s industrial area.

A burst underground pipe, which carries blood residue from the abattoir via the pumphouse to Dundee,  for separate processing, caused the liquid to seep into the road. The flow left scrapyard owner Fanie Terreblanche alarmed as it ran past the entrance of his business.

“This has been an ongoing issue for us, and it is difficult to run a business with blood streaming past the shop,” Terreblanche said.

A spokesperson for the Glencoe abattoir, who asked not to be named, said workers reacted quickly to divert the spill and keep it off the road.

The damaged pipe is said to be several metres underground. Workers from the Umzinyathi District Municipality, responsible for water services in the area, will need to use an excavator to reach and repair the break.
