Dundee SPCA staff remain on duty throughout New Year to ensure pets are safe
Dundee SPCA vows to protect pets during festive season, offering kennels, emergency support, and advice to owners for animal safety.
While many will enjoy the Christmas break, the dedicated staff at Dundee SPCA will remain on duty, working to ensure animals are cared for and safe.
The SPCA will operate as usual from 9am–3.30pm daily, Saturdays from 8am–noon, and Sundays and public holidays from 7am–8am, when staff open to feed and clean the kennelled animals. An emergency number (072 949 6235) will be available for urgent cases.
“SPCA is here to protect all animals’
SPCA inspector Melanie van der Westhuizen urged owners who cannot care for pets to use the drop-off point rather than abandoning them. “We are here to step in and protect animals from neglect,” she said.
Pet owners going away can use the SPCA’s boarding kennels at R40 per day for small dogs or cats, and R60 per day for large dogs. Melanie also reminded residents to handle fireworks responsibly to avoid harming animals.
Reflecting on the year, Melanie cited two brutal cases in Dundee and Kingsley that highlighted the need for public compliance with the Animal Protection Act. She also encouraged sterilisation of pets at the State Vet’s office, costing R250 for male dogs and R150 for male cats.
The team welcomed Cathy Sewraj back after health issues, now volunteering again. Melanie concluded by wishing all Courier readers a blessed Christmas and New Year, and safety for every animal.
