Police arrest two suspects with unlicensed firearms in Umzinyathi area

Police arrest two suspects and seize rifles during an intelligence-driven operation in Oqungwini

Two suspects, aged 58 and 61, were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in the Oqungwini area of Umzinyathi.

“The operation was carried out by the uMzinyathi District Crime Intelligence Unit, working alongside the Newcastle Public Order Policing Unit within the Nhlanhleni policing area,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana.

In the early hours of the morning, officers acted on information about individuals allegedly in possession of illegal firearms, targeting two identified locations.

At the first property, one suspect was found with a .308 rifle, a 7.65 pistol and ammunition, leading to his arrest.

Police then moved to a second address, where another suspect was arrested after being found in possession of an R5 rifle.

All recovered firearms and ammunition will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commission of any crimes.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Msinga Magistrate’s Court soon.
