For Dundee Bowling Club president Taryn Bierbaum, bowls began as a way to get involved in the local business league but soon developed into a passion that took her to district level.

Bierbaum started playing business league bowls in 2015 before joining Dundee Bowling Club in August 2016.

Just a month later, she competed in her first official tournament in Vryheid, marking the beginning of an increasingly successful bowling journey.

Over the years, Bierbaum progressed through the ranks and now represents the district as lead for the District Ladies’ A side.

Her involvement in bowls has also extended beyond competition and into the running of the club.

After serving as Dundee Bowling Club secretary for six years, Bierbaum is now president, taking on a leadership role both on and off the greens.

For Bierbaum, however, success is not simply measured by competition results or titles.

“What motivates me is to be the best version of myself every day, lead people in a professional and respectful manner, and treat people the way I expect to be treated,” she said.

Her journey from business league newcomer to district-level player and club president reflects her commitment to both the sport and her community.

Bierbaum also wants to challenge the perception that bowls is only for older people.

She believes the club’s business league demonstrates that the sport can be enjoyed by people of different ages and experience levels.

“Our business league, that attracts so many social bowlers, is proof that it is a sport many can enjoy,” she said.

“Like myself, so many have progressed from ‘just having fun’ to starting to play the sport at a more serious level without losing the fun element.”
