MKP’s Makuyi granted bail in Estcourt assault case
Makuyi released on R1,000 bail after brief court appearance.
A prominent member of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in Estcourt, Mncedisi Makuyi, was released on bail today (July 10) following a brief appearance in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court. Makuyi had been arrested over the weekend and was allegedly charged with assault involving a family member, reportedly his wife. SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed the arrest and stated that the case, which began with the accused’s first appearance on Monday, was remanded to today.
MKP local spokesperson Gcino Gwala addressed the media outside court, stating that while the party stands firmly against gender-based violence (GBV), it believes this is a private, domestic matter rather than a political issue. “We are not here to support the accused, but to support the Makuyi family as a whole,” Gwala said, expressing hope that the family will find a resolution.

Outside the courthouse, the atmosphere was charged as MK members gathered in solidarity, including KwaZulu-Natal Legislature MK representative Nathi Mthethwa. They were met by ANC protesters, among them Ward 10 Councillor Edith Lite, who chanted, “Down with GBV, down!”
A protester dressed in Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) regalia held a placard reading: “IFP says no to GBV.”
