Prominent MK member appears in court

Party members and supporters were outside the court, singing and showing their support for Makuyi

Mkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) spokesperson in the uThukela region, Mcedisi Makuyi, appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Monday (May 6), facing charges related to allegedly swearing at someone during the recent MK loud-hailing process in Wembezi Township.

According to Makuyi, they were driving around the township, letting people know about the meeting that was going to be held at the Wembezi Hall. He said the problem started when they reached the ward councillor’s street, where the councillor’s family members allegedly threw items at their cars.

“The public needs the truth that led to my arrest. We were announcing to the community of Wembezi at night, asking for a meeting to be held at the hall on May 1, travelling in MK cars.

“We announced it to the whole township and there was no problem. The problem started when we got to the street of the councillor from the Depo section, where his siblings threw stuff at the cars we were travelling in. Luckily, our whole journey was being recorded.

“When we stopped to discipline the children, the aunt or sister came out. She didn’t ask any questions; she just started swearing at us. My only response to this attack was to say, ‘Let’s go and leave this grandmother swearing alone’,” said Makuyi.

He claims that what he said has been changed to something he did not say.

Officers from Public Order Policing (POP) were present to monitor the situation.

The case was postponed to June 4.
