Newcastle police are investigating an armed robbery after a business owner was allegedly attacked at a factory in the Riverside Industrial area last week.

According to an official police source, who cannot be named, the victim’s wife reported that the incident occurred at about 06:30 at the Edison Street premises, where the couple lives with their baby.

She said her husband had woken up early and was reviewing the previous day’s security camera footage before opening the door to allow employees into the factory.

It was at that point, she alleged, that he was confronted and attacked by two unknown men, one of whom was reportedly armed with a bush knife.

A struggle ensued, during which the business owner sustained injuries to his hand and side. Despite his injuries, he managed to disarm the suspects, who fled the scene.

His wife activated the panic button to alert police.

“When footage was reviewed, it was discovered that the suspects had gained entry by bending corrugated iron sheeting at the back of the factory,” said the source.

This access point allegedly led to the living quarters of one of the victim’s employees. A bunch of missing keys was later found outside the employee’s room.

Following up on information received, members of the Newcastle Detectives, K9 Unit, Task Team and Stabilisation Team arrested two more suspects in Madadeni, Section 1.

“Blood-stained clothing matching descriptions seen in the footage was also recovered,” he said.

Police investigations are ongoing and are expected to lead to the arrest of a fourth suspect.
