Mayor Sibisi announced that the contractor for Phase 2 of the project would be introduced soon.

The community of Ward 36, kwaSigweje, has welcomed the completion of the first phase of a 7.5-kilometre asphalt road, which was officially handed over by Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor Zama Sibisi on Tuesday (July 7).

The new road is expected to improve transport for residents, learners, farmers and local businesses while providing easier access to essential services and economic opportunities.

Municipality commits to more road projects

During the handover ceremony – which was attended by traditional leaders, councillors, municipal officials and community members – the mayor announced that the contractor for Phase 2 of the project would be introduced soon.

He also revealed plans for road rehabilitation in Ward 36 and the construction of new gravel roads in Ward 32, 34 and 35, reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure.

Community benefits beyond the road

Deputy Mayor and Ward 36 Councillor S Simelane thanked everyone who supported the project, while iNkosi Kunene praised the municipality for prioritising development and encouraged residents to protect public infrastructure.

As part of the project’s community upliftment programme, the contractor, CNICE Plant Hire and Logistics (Pty) Ltd, donated a goat to iNkosi Kunene and distributed food parcels to five vulnerable community members, marking the completion of the first phase with a gesture of support for the local community.
