Learners support efforts to save Sherillyn Dumas

Funds will go towards helping Sherillyn beat cystic fibrosis

To show their support and love for Sherillyn Dumas, a former learner and staff member of Drakensview Primary School, along with the learners and staff, held a ‘Pyjama Day’ fund-raiser on May 12.

It was a novel idea to raise funds, and one that was loved by the learners and teachers alike. In addition to staving off the crisp autumn morning, the learners wore their PJs for a good cause and a total of R5080 was collected. These funds will go towards helping Sherillyn beat cystic fibrosis (CF), which is a life-threatening and debilitating disorder and has seen the 42-year-old mother of two hospitalised frequently.

CF is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body. Inevitably, most CF sufferers don’t live a full life and require special care, as well as medication.

At some point in their journey, their lungs will become too weak to absorb enough oxygen to survive. Sherillyn requires life-saving treatment, which comes with a hefty price tag. In South Africa, CF sufferers will spend approximately R6 million per year, so the family has sought an alternative life-saving treatment from Argentina that will cost R350,000 for a supply for five months.
