Asbestos removal project now has amended timeline
The delays are said to be caused by pre-construction activities and statutory compliances when undertaking the implementation of a project of this nature
The Department of Human Settlements has set itself the task of beginning the asbestos removal project by this month (July). However, is this a realistic date?
As we know, sports grounds in Forderville and Colita have been earmarked as areas to provide temporary shelter to the homeowners.
Here, housing units with sanitation, accommodation for pets, and other communal necessities have yet to be constructed.
Sandile Sibiya, spokesperson for the department, said that thus far, the site establishment has been complete, procurement of temporary units for beneficiaries is underway, and a beneficiary verification process has commenced.
After undergoing three assessments, the department was positive that the Colita / Forderville Pre-94 Rectification Project (which will see the removal of dangerous asbestos roofing from 352 homes) would commence in May. So what has caused the delays in this project that has been on the backburner for decades?
“The delays are caused by pre-construction activities and statutory compliances when undertaking the implementation of a project of this nature. The actual construction is expected to start in July 2023,” Sibiya said.
He added that the first step is to finalise all the pre-construction activities and prioritise the beneficiaries according to their qualifying criteria. The entire project is expected to take 24 months to complete.
