Determined and focused Chrizmie fulfils her passion on the catwalk

From childhood 14-year-old born and bred Newcastilian Chrizmie Mostert has always had a passion for the catwalk and posing in 'fancy and sparkly dresses'.

Currently in Grade 8 at Ferrum High School, like most teenage girls, her hobbies include modelling, cheerleading, reading, and primarily taking care of herself, such as skincare routines, working out and going on walks.

A passion for modelling:

Modelling has always been a significant interest of Chrizmie’s. Initially, she taught herself various skills. However, at the beginning of this year, she began formal training with the Figures Modelling Agency.

“As a little girl I always dreamed of becoming a runway model. I would study modelling techniques and practice walking like a professional model. After starting my formal training this year, I started competing in various competitions,” she told the Advertiser. “My modelling teacher, Betty Tshabalala, has been instrumental in my successes so far. She has provided me with numerous opportunities to compete and has trained me for each event. Every pageant I have participated in has taught me new skills which I thoroughly enjoy learning and mastering.”

In less than a year, Chrizmie has tried to participate in as many competitions as possible and has even exceeded her own expectations with her exceptional achievements.

These have been as follows:

  • Figures modelling: Chrizmie achieved Top-10 at Figures Modelling Agency and was selected by Figures head office to take part in the prestigious Project AIM CONVENTION in March 2025 on board the MSC Boat Cruise.
  • Talent Africa Competition: Chrizmie participated in the Talent Africa Regional competition facilitated by EnStage Dance Studio on July 29. She participated in three items and achieved the following: Runway: Gold, High Fashion: Gold and Formal: Gold.
Chrizmie qualified for her Federation Provincial Colours presented by FPASA. She will take part in the National Round of Talent Africa from September 19–29, where the selection of the South African Federation Team will be announced to represent South Africa internationally.
  • WOW Make-up—Face of the Year: Chrizmie participated in the WOW Make-up Face of the Year competition on July 25 and was selected as a finalist. She will be competing in Sandton on August 11, where the winner will win a year of free makeup, 1st runner-up, 6 months free make-up, and 2nd runner-up, 3 months free make-up.
  • Upcoming event: Miss Wonderwomen 2024: Chrizmie is also excited to take part in the upcoming Miss Wonder Women pageant for Cancer Awareness to take place on August 17.

Miss Pre-Teen Universe SA:

Chrizmie was recently selected as a semi-finalist for Miss Pre-Teen Universe South Africa. The finalists will take to the final stage in March 2025, where Miss Pre-Tee Universe will be crowned.

After competing in various competitions throughout the year, Chrizmie said many people encouraged her to enter Miss Pre-Teen Universe SA.

“I entered Miss Pre-Teen Universe to advance my modelling career, learn more, and find a platform to raise awareness about learning disabilities in the education system. Having personal experience with these challenges, I empathise deeply and believe I can empower others who face similar struggles. I’ve learnt to transform my weaknesses into strengths, accept myself, and focus on what I’m good at.”

While growing up, Chrizmie said she was inspired by Mieke van der Merwe, the daughter of her pre-school teacher. She started her modelling career and quickly earned numerous titles, eventually becoming Miss Eco Tourism World 2024.

This gave Chrizmie the courage and hope that she too could achieve success if she worked hard.

“Following her journey made me realise that pageants are not just about beauty but about making a real difference in society by aiming to build, support and encourage others along the way.”

According to Chrizmie, her parents and family are tremendously proud of her achievements and wholeheartedly support her every step of the way.

“My father, Henri Mostert, was also crowned Mr. Newcastle and Catwalk Model of the Year in his younger days, so it is such an honour for me to follow in his footsteps and hopefully exceeds them,” she said proudly.

What qualities must one have to succeed in the world of modelling?

Chrizmie believes the key mindset is to stay consistent while simultaneously prioritising your modelling, health, and schoolwork.

“Anyone entering the modelling industry needs to have a clear set of goals to aim for. Finding a good agency that shares your passion and provides you with opportunities is essential. You also need to be prepared to work hard and have confidence in your abilities.”

Future goals:

“Currently, I have two big competitions ahead of me, and all my focus will be on giving my best. If I am selected as a finalist, I want to seize every opportunity my new role entails. I want to excel and learn as my journey continues. I still dream of becoming a runway model, working in the fashion industry, and becoming famous. A girl’s got to dream!”

Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to pursue a modelling career?

“Pursue your passion and focus on learning everything you can. Don’t worry about what others think—just be yourself. Stay true to who you are and strive to make a positive difference. Stay humble, have fun, believe in yourself, and get trained! And, of course, world peace! (Miss Congeniality), she laughed.

A little word of advice:

Chrizmie’s advice to anyone wanting to pursue a career in modelling is:

“To be a star, you must burn. Life can be tough at times, and we need to push through those hard moments because they shape us into who we are. That’s why it’s important to accept yourself as you are and seize every opportunity life presents to you,” she concluded.
