Estcourt residents queue for new meter registration

The deadline for meter box registration has been extended to November 24

As the deadline approaches for Eskom’s new meter registration for prepaid customers, Estcourt residents are pouring into the Eskom offices to change their meters.

The MK Party in Estcourt took it upon themselves to help the people standing in long queues, waiting to be assisted by Eskom. They provided customers with chairs, tents, fruit and tea.

MK said that, as a party, they have seen the difficulties that community members face on a daily basis as they wait in long queues.

This comes after Eskom requested citizens to check and re-code their meters, as required by the Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA). After the deadline, the old meters will no longer accept electricity tokens unless they are updated with a new Key Revision Number (KRN). If this is not done, customers will be unable to load electricity tokens.

According to Eskom, people must check whether their meter has been re-coded/upgraded to KRN2 or is still on KRN1. Enter the code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on your prepaid meter’s keypad. The screen will display either the number 1 or 2; in some cases, there may also be letters of the alphabet alongside the KRN number.

Number 1 means your meter is still on KRN1 and needs to be re-coded/upgraded to KRN2.

If your meter has not been re-coded, it will not accept the tokens you have purchased and will stop working.
