Municipality raids local businesses in search of expired goods

One supermarket was closed after expired food like atchar and chips were found on the shelves

Yesterday (November 13), a team from Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality carried out an inspection of local businesses to check for expired goods that are not fit for human consumption. Mayor Mduduzi Myeza led the operation, accompanied by municipal manager SB Mthembu, speaker SW Khumalo, councillors and the SAPS.

Although there have been no reports to date in Estcourt of people getting sick after eating expired food, this inspection comes in the wake of many reports from around the country of people falling ill and even dying as a result of eating ‘old’ or ‘contaminated’ foodstuffs. Some of the victims have been children.

Myeza said this campaign focuses on combating the violation of consumer rights by inspecting businesses (spaza shops and supermarkets) suspected of selling dodgy products and operating under unhygienic conditions.

Unannounced, the team raided supermarkets in and around Estcourt, where some of the goods were found to be expired and incorrectly labelled. Customers were not allowed in the shops while they were being inspected.

One supermarket was closed for contravention of by-laws.
