Colita community gets to grips with illegal dumping

Cllr Lite and government stakeholders are planning to have another big meeting with the community

The community of Colita (Ward 10) learnt more about illegal dumping and hygiene during the Waste Management Awareness & Clean-up Campaign that was held at the Colita Hall on Wednesday (December 4).

The initiative was organised by the Ward Task Team.

As a stakeholder, Bongokuhle Sangweni from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) taught the community how to manage waste, warning them against illegal dumping and pleading with them to reduce the use of plastic bags when shopping. He also touched on the topic of recycling to help keep the environment clean and generate income at the same time.

Ward 10 Cllr Edith Lite said there was a need for a community meeting to talk about hygiene and illegal dumping because there is a high level of dumping in the community. When it rains, the dumped refuse causes blockages in the drainage system.

With this in mind, the community and stakeholders started up a cleaning campaign in some illegal dumping hot-spots around Colita. They got their hands dirty to keep the area clean!
