Tragic crash leaves 1 dead

An inquiry revealed that the deceased had earlier been arrested and released for an alleged assault.

The notorious R34 route, to Blood River, claimed another life on Thursday and while the tragedy was at first blamed on the potholed-riddle road surface, an investigation revealed that the deceased driver drove purposely into a tanker.
The tanker, which was carrying highly flammable nitrogen gas, did not catch fire, which could have caused a catastrophic explosion.

Remarkably, neither the truck nor the 32-year-old victim, who died on impact, swerved to avoid a pothole, suggesting that the collision was deliberate.
The accident saw an outpouring of anger from those who took to social media bemoaning the condition of that road which has seen many crashes.
However, an inquiry revealed that the deceased had earlier been arrested and released for an alleged assault and had expressed his desire to end his life to his friends and family rather than face another arrest or imprisonment.
The deceased’s identity is known to the Vryheid Herald, but due to the sensitivity of the situation and out of respect for his family and friends, his name will remain undisclosed. The Vryheid Herald extends its deepest condolences to the deceased’s loved ones.
