District, CoGTA and Umngeni-uThukela Water sign new agreement

The Department of Water & Sanitation said they are looking forward to rolling out the agreement and seeing the community drinking safe and clean water.

Yesterday (August 19), the Department of Co-operative Governance & Traditiional Affairs (CoGTA), uThukela District Municipality and uMngeni-uThukela Water signed an historic tripartite agreement to improve water access in the district. The agreement focuses on delivering clean, reliable water through new projects and refurbishing existing water treatment plants in Estcourt, Ladysmith and Bergville.

The signing ceremony at the Wembezi Multi-Purpose Hall was attended by CoGTA MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, uThukela District Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Mayor Mduduzi Myeza, as well as officials from uMngeni-uThukela Water and the Department of Water & Sanitation.

MEC Buthelezi highlighted that this partnership is the first of its kind, bringing together government departments and the district municipality to manage water and sanitation infrastructure. He praised uThukela District for recent efforts, including new water projects in Okhahlamba and other areas.

Officials hailed the agreement as a turning point for water provision in uThukela, emphasising that action, not promises, will now drive improvements.
