False lion video sparks SPCA investigation in Ingogo

The Newcastle SPCA is investigating a reported lion sighting in Ingogo after a viral video, proven false, raised local safety concerns. Read more here:

A viral video of a lion said to be roaming in Ingogo has been confirmed as false, but one local insists on seeing a big cat.

The video has circulated on social media since June 2025 and was originally said to have been filmed in Paarl.

Jenavieve Tinkler of the Newcastle SPCA confirmed that the footage was not from Ingogo. However, a local resident reported seeing a lion in the Ingogo area.

The caller said they received the video as a warning, prompting them to be extra cautious.

They later claimed to have spotted a lion near a local school, which was temporarily closed as a precaution.

The resident immediately contacted the SPCA and shared a pin location of the alleged sighting.

“We are very well aware that this could be a false report. However, for the safety of everyone involved and the safety of the animal, we need to treat this seriously until proven otherwise,” said Tinkler.

She stressed that if the claim is found to be false, action will follow, as such reports waste valuable time and resources.

Tinkler insisted that the intention was not to cause panic but to inform Ingogo residents to ensure their vigilance.

She added that the SPCA is in contact with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife to determine the next steps and will provide updates soon.

The Newcastle Advertiser has attempted to contact the person who claimed to have spotted the lion. However she has declined an interview.
