Flash floods put emergency services on high alert

Emergency services are urging residents to stay indoors as flash floods have disrupted various parts of Newcastle this evening. Read more here:

Flash floods have placed all emergency services on high alert after heavy rainfall and hail struck Newcastle earlier this afternoon (Sunday, November 9).

Several areas, including the central business district, Hutten Heights, Barry Hertzog Park and Amajuba Park were hit by the flash flooding.

Traffic officials have closed most roads leading into the central business district and urged motorists to avoid the area completely. The intersection of Boundary and Bird streets is also currently inaccessible.

Community WhatsApp groups have been flooded with reports from residents whose homes and properties have taken in water.

The Newcastle Community Policing Forum issued a safety warning, saying: “Dear community. It is not necessary for you to leave your homes to view the town. Please remain indoors. Only leave if it is an emergency. We urge all residents to please remain at home. Thank you, CPF Newcastle.”

Residents are advised to stay off the roads until the flood waters subside.
