The Newcastle Lions Club welcomed three new members at an intimate induction ceremony held on Saturday, December 5.

Aletta Botha, Roshni Naicker and Jessica Grossman were presented with the customary Lion pin by club president, Lizette van der Berg, marking a significant step in their journey of community involvement.

“This pin is a symbol of your commitment to our club’s values of service and fellowship. Wear it with pride,” Van der Berg urged.

“On your Lions badge, you will see two lions’ heads surrounding the letter ‘L’. The lion looking to the left represents our looking to the past 100 years, and the one to the right is looking to the future as we progress into the next 100 years,” she explained

The moment was celebrated among existing members of the club, friends, family and key figures in the community, who were also acknowledged for their contributions.

A candle-lighting ceremony concluded the formalities.

“In the world around, we see hatred, suspicion and fear. We see the poverty and loneliness of the world’s people, but in these times of darkness, there is light which is shining brightly to provide hope. That is the light of Lionism,” said Van der Berg.

Looking back on 2025, Van der Berg reflected on a year filled with hard work, big hearts and meaningful impact.

“Every project we completed, every person we helped and every smile we created was possible because of our Lions members, who showed up, gave their time, talents and energy, and embraced our motto, ‘We Serve’, not just in words, but in action,” she concluded.

The new board of 2026 comprises of Lizette van der Berg as president, Annette Conradie as vice-president, Jennifer Annandale as secretary, Cassandra Niemann as treasurer, Nicolette Baney as service chair, Jackie de Bruin as membership chair and Samantha Shaw as environmental champion.

At the close of the event, certificates of appreciation were awarded to various community organisations, including the Winter Festival committee, Huttenpark Primary, the Sakekamer, Lady’s Circle and the Newcastle Advertiser.

The ‘Lion of the Year’ title was awarded to Annette Conradie for the second consecutive year.

Conradie was praised for her dedication, hard work, heart, leadership and humility, while Louw Conradie was awarded the title of ‘Lion Husband of the Year’ for always being ready to assist the club, no matter the task.
