One person died after a vehicle plunged off the road into water near Klipfontein Dam.

One person was killed after a car plunged off the road and into water near Klipfontein Dam during the early hours of this morning (Saturday).

Police alerted shortly after 03:00

Police sources who are not authorised to speak to the media confirmed that officers were alerted to the crash shortly after 03:00. The vehicle had left the roadway, dropped several metres down an embankment and crashed into a culvert before ending up submerged at one of the dam’s inflow points.

Technical rescue operation launched

Rescue teams from KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services were called in to assist and treated the scene as a technical recovery. The sources said emergency crews initially feared there may have been two people in the vehicle. “When the car was lifted out of the water, it was confirmed that there was only one occupant,” a police source said.

The driver was declared dead at the scene.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are still being investigated.
