Potholes cause car to crash into fence in Peacevale

Deep potholes force a driver off Hajee Jamal Street, damaging a fence and renewing calls for urgent road repairs.

A motorist was injured on Saturday evening after a vehicle veered off Hajee Jamal Street in Peacevale and crashed into a palisade fence, with large potholes believed to be the cause.

The badly damaged stretch of road has posed a danger to motorists for months, with deep ruts making driving increasingly difficult.

Cllr Zitha Shelembe, who lives in the area, said the driver sustained a shoulder injury and told him he had attempted to swerve to avoid the potholes when he lost control of the vehicle.

“We are thankful there were no serious injuries,” said Shelembe.

Road repairs awaited

Shelembe added that long-awaited repairs to Hajee Jamal Street, estimated to cost R13 million, are expected to begin soon and should significantly improve road safety in the area.
