Police arrest eight suspects as they clamp down on contact crimes in Umzinyathi

Police have arrested eight suspects across Umzinyathi as they intensify efforts to tackle contact crimes and protect vulnerable victims.

Police in the Umzinyathi District have arrested eight suspects, aged between 18 and 45, as part of intensified operations to curb contact crimes, including rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The arrests were made across several policing precincts, including Dundee, Nquthu and Nhlanhleni, where contact crimes remain a major concern.

Targeted operation against gender-based violence

The arrests followed a focused operation led by members of the Dundee Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. The operation targeted suspects linked to recently opened cases, some of which involve minors as victims.
SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence in the district.
“All eight suspects were successfully traced and arrested during the operation. They have been formally charged and will appear before the Dundee, Msinga and Nquthu Magistrates’ Courts,” Nkwanyana said.

Suspects to appear in court

Police confirmed that the suspects face serious charges relating to contact crimes. Their court appearances will take place at different magistrates’ courts, depending on where the offences were allegedly committed.
The Umzinyathi District Commissioner, Major General Francis Slambert, praised officers for their commitment to protecting vulnerable members of the community.
Police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations aimed at reducing violent crime and encouraging community members to report incidents to their nearest police station.
