Former resident accuses Umzinyathi District Municipality of rogue billing

Umzinyathi District Municipality, billing dispute, Public Protector, service delivery

A former Endumeni resident has accused Umzinyathi District Municipality of “rogue behaviour” and called on the Public Protector to investigate its billing and service delivery practices.

John Jones, who owns properties in Dundee and Glencoe, claims he was repeatedly overcharged and did not receive regular statements.

“I was overcharged for two properties in Dundee. Although the accounts were later credited, the meter readings never matched the statements,” he said.

Jones said he followed the municipality’s complaints process before the Public Protector intervened and assisted in securing a refund. However, he maintains that he is still not receiving complete statements.

School property concerns

He also alleges irregular billing at a pre-primary school property in Glencoe, claiming charges remained unchanged despite a drop in learner numbers.

“We were forced to pay R8 500 to avoid disconnection, despite never receiving a notice or statement,” he said.

Jones further claims the property was billed for water despite having no supply at the time.

He has since launched an online petition calling for a formal investigation.

Umzinyathi District Municipality was approached for comment. At the time of going to press, no response had been received.
