During its annual general meeting on February 26, 1959, Newcastle SPCA chairman Mr Jansen reported a decline in cruelty cases during 1958, although several warnings had still been issued.

Five coal trucks were derailed between Utrecht Colliery and the railway station after sections of track were found to be bent and broken. No further details were reported at the time.
