Mamush Bekele claims first Vryheid parkrun victory
Mamush Bekele wins as runners record personal bests at Vryheid parkrun.
Despite slightly lower participation numbers this past Saturday, the spirit and determination of runners remained strong at the weekly Vryheid parkrun.
New results format introduced
Organisers noted that thanks to behind-the-scenes support from parkrun ambassadors and staff, the event’s statistics and results are now easily accessible in a single visual summary. While the new format offers a quick and efficient way for participants to receive their results and share them with friends and family, organisers said it does not always capture the full story of the morning.
Memorable moments on the course
Saturday’s event, for example, included a large number of mostly unregistered young runners, a fiercely competitive group of participants finishing between 35 and 45 minutes, and runners determined to stay ahead of the 30-minute pacer. There were also proud family moments, including a mother celebrating her daughter’s first-place finish and another participant carrying two youngsters while completing the course four minutes faster than the previous week.
Bekele claims first victory
The overall winner on the day was Mamush Bekele, who regularly finishes among the top 10 but secured his first victory at the Vryheid parkrun on Saturday.
Another standout performance came from Tahlia Roelofsz, who finished as the first female and first junior, placing an impressive fourth overall. She was warmly congratulated by fellow runners and her proud mother at the finish line.
Milestones and personal bests
Milestone achievements were also celebrated, with Malusi Nkosi and Alta Meyer both completing their 25th parkrun events.
Although participation numbers were slightly lower, possibly due to the severe storm that struck the area on Thursday afternoon and several sporting events taking place in town, performances on the course remained strong. The group finishing between 35 and 45 minutes delivered the majority of the weekend’s personal bests.
Fourteen of the 16 personal best times recorded fell within that time bracket, highlighting the determination and progress of runners in the middle of the field. Congratulations went to Ayanda, Nonsikelelo, David, Halley, Macayla, Lika, Louise, Chantell, Gcinekile, Sonja, Zar, Johanné, Light, Nozipho, Tylor and Nelisiwe for their achievements.
Community spirit remains strong
Organisers said that while the new results format will be used going forward, photos and commentary will continue to accompany weekly reports to capture the community spirit that makes the Vryheid parkrun special.
