uThukela leaders visit Thembalihle after vandalism at pump station

Officials commented that the vandalism has worsened existing water shortages in the area.

uThukela District Municipality Deputy Mayor MC Mkhize, together with Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Mayor Mduduzi Myeza, visited Thembalihle yesterday (March 12) after a pump station was vandalised.

The vandalism occurred on Sunday (March 2) , leaving the community without water and worsening existing water shortages in the area.

Extensive damage to water infrastructure

During the visit, Mkhize revealed that key infrastructure at the pump station had been destroyed, including an electric pole, transformer, electricity panel and water pumps. He described the vandalism as costly and a major contributor to service delivery challenges.

Temporary water supply arranged

The municipality has arranged a water tanker from the Department of Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) to supply residents on weekdays, starting today (March 13).

Discussions are also underway with Eskom to replace the damaged transformer, while community members have been urged to help identify those responsible for the vandalism.
