Patriotic Dundee resident, 84, steps in to fix water leak after months of waste
It took an 84-year-old Dundee woman to take matters into her own hands with authorities failed to fix a long standing water leak.
A long-standing water leak at the Environmental Centre on Tatham Street, Dundee, has finally been repaired – thanks to a concerned resident who paid for the work herself.
Life-long Dundonian Sherlee Wade said she spent R300 of her own money to fix a leaking pipe at an adjacent government-owned property after repeated attempts to have the issue addressed failed.
According to Wade, who lives in the adjacent Eventide Mews complex, water had been “gushing” from the pipes for nearly three months, with numerous calls made to the centre’s management yielding no results.
“I was told there was no money to fix the problem,” she said.
“There was no assistance”
Wade added that she also approached a councillor, but no assistance was forthcoming.
“I don’t mind paying to fix it, but it is unacceptable that such a serious water leak was ignored for so long,” she said.
She believes the matter should have been attended to by the relevant government department.
Wade expressed concern that, while thousands of litres of water were being wasted, some residents in nearby areas, such as Sibongile, have been without water for months.
“Our country is falling apart because of poor maintenance and a lack of accountability,” she said.
She also confirmed that Eventide Mews manager, Mervyn Smith, had raised the issue with officials on several occasions before the repair.
