Committee assesses progress of Amajuba infrastructure projects
The Public Works Portfolio Committee visited Newcastle Hospital and Celani Primary School.
The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature’s Public Works Portfolio Committee conducted an oversight visit to the Amajuba District on Friday (March 20) to evaluate progress in key infrastructure projects, including developments at Celani Primary School and Newcastle Hospital.
Led by chairperson PN Msimango, the committee met at the Department of Public Works offices in Newcastle before proceeding to inspect the sites. The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and monitor the delivery of public infrastructure projects across the province.
Newcastle Hospital
At Newcastle Hospital, the committee assessed a major upgrade project aimed at enhancing security systems, improving fire detection and prevention measures, and converting the existing boiler system to more energy-efficient heat pumps.
The project, which commenced in May 2024, was initially scheduled for completion within 24 months. However, officials reported that the project has reached 95% completion, with delays contributed to budget overruns, contractor liabilities, and unexpected flooding encountered during excavation work.
Speaking during the visit, medical manager Dr JJN Duze expressed concern over the slow progress. “We are disappointed that the renovations have been delayed,” she said. She further noted that ongoing issues with the access control systems and non-functional CCTV cameras have added frustration to operational functions.
Despite these challenges, Duze confirmed that the hospital remains functional. Entrance gates are operational, an exit plan is in place, and services continue to be delivered to the public.
Meeting conclusion
The committee emphasised the importance of completing the remaining work to ensure that the hospital benefits from the intended upgrades.
The visit also included an assessment of progress at the newly-built Celani Primary School, as part of the committee’s broader mandate to oversee infrastructure development in the region.
