Sentraal maintain unbeaten run despite match cancellations

Sentraal stay unbeaten as cancelled fixtures frustrate preparations ahead of league restart

Sentraal rugby team now boast a run of three games without a loss. The problem is that for the past three Saturdays, their opponents have all cancelled at ’99’.

First, Ladysmith cancelled what was to be a home game for them; then the Glencoe-based team was ditched last Saturday by the Highlanders of Newcastle, and most recently by Kriel from Mpumalanga. Despite that disappointment, Sentraal chairman Deon Kriel, his team and enthusiastic supporters stayed at the clubhouse to enjoy an impromptu braai and talk team tactics.

Cancellations leave coach and team frustrated

“We have hosted Volksrust in a friendly, and then we travelled to Secunda, which ended in a draw. It’s disappointing when you set everything up to host your visitors, only to have them cancel,” a frustrated Kriel said.

Sentraal is hoping more sponsors will come forward to assist with additions to the clubhouse and travel arrangements for players. While they could not run out onto the field, the players showed great camaraderie, which stands them in good stead when the league officially starts after Easter, with their first game against old enemies Vryheid.
