Mayor’s social media post sparks debate
The South African Refugees Organisation has issued a warning that such rhetoric could incite violence and pose serious risks.
A recent social media post by Mduduzi Myeza, mayor of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, has ignited widespread debate and public reaction.
Mayor targets illegal foreigners?
Ahead of the Easter holidays, the mayor wrote: “After Easter, we will confront undocumented foreign nationals directly. Their time is up, and I ask that they begin relocating, especially from town. I have also received their message saying they are not going anywhere, but we will see how it ends.”
The statement drew mixed responses on social media, with some people praising his stance, while critics strongly condemned it.
Concerns over safety and rising tensions
According to The Witness, the South African Refugees Organisation has expressed strong opposition to the mayor’s remarks, issuing a warning that such rhetoric could incite violence and pose serious risks. The organisation described the statement as inflammatory and dangerous.
With the Easter period now over, there are expectations that the mayor may proceed with a campaign targeting undocumented foreign nationals. He has consistently voiced opposition to undocumented immigrants, particularly in Estcourt, where he has previously led raids on local businesses.
More recently, he was also seen taking a leading role in a march held in Durban, further highlighting his firm stance on the issue.
