Endumeni Municipality condemns office shutdown after protest disruption
Endumeni Municipality says unlawful protests disrupted services and placed staff and residents at risk.
Endumeni Municipality has strongly condemned the temporary shutdown of its Dundee offices on Monday morning (May 18) following protest action by members of the Make Endumeni Live Again movement.
Municipal employees were prevented from entering the building after the main entrance was chained and locked.
Municipality warns against unlawful disruptions
Acting municipal manager T Manda said the municipality would not tolerate unlawful disruptions to municipal operations.
“The municipality does not support or tolerate any form of unlawful disruption of municipal operations. Community concerns must be raised through lawful and proper channels,” Manda said.
He added that the closure disrupted service delivery and created safety concerns for both staff and members of the public.
“With the intervention of the Endumeni Traffic Department and SAPS, access to the offices was restored at approximately 10:00,” he said.
Mayor Mcebo Mkhize and Speaker A M Nsibande later engaged with members of the community regarding concerns raised during the protest.
According to Manda, the mayor, who also chairs the Community Safety Forum, will convene a stakeholder meeting at the municipality on June 2 to address issues relating to undocumented foreign nationals and by-law compliance.
“The municipality urges all stakeholders to engage through lawful and peaceful means and confirms that unlawful disruptions will not be tolerated,” Manda said.
