Reading Open Day inspires learners at Gangeyana Primary
Gangeyana Primary School's Reading Open Day encouraged literacy and celebrated learner achievement.
Gangeyana Primary School in the Msinga district recently hosted a successful Reading Open Day aimed at promoting a culture of reading while encouraging greater parental involvement in education.
The event formed part of the school’s ongoing literacy campaign in response to concerns about reading comprehension levels among learners across South Africa.
Led by the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign committee, the programme brought together learners, parents and educators to highlight the importance of reading and comprehension skills.
Gangeyana Primary School is one of several schools participating in the Courier’s Print Media in Education programme, through which schools receive bundles of back copies of the newspaper to help foster a love of reading and improve literacy skills.
School promotes literacy and parental involvement
Parents attended reading and recitation activities presented by learners and enthusiastically supported the programme throughout the day. School officials said many parents expressed pride as children confidently demonstrated their reading abilities before an audience.
The event also featured the presentation of academic excellence awards, recognising learners for their achievements and motivating others to strive for success in the classroom.
School management said parental involvement plays a vital role in developing strong reading habits and improving literacy outcomes. Encouraging reading at home helps reinforce skills learned in the classroom and creates a supportive learning environment for children.
The Reading Open Day forms part of the school’s broader efforts to strengthen literacy, build learner confidence and cultivate a lifelong love of books and learning.
Organisers described the event as a valuable opportunity to showcase learner progress while highlighting the importance of reading as a foundation for future academic success.
