VCSS athletics day promotes unity and healthy competition

VCSS learners and teachers showcased talent and unity at a spirited inter-house sports day.

Vryheid Comprehensive Secondary School (VCSS) recently hosted a lively inter-house sports day at the Cecil Emmet sports fields, with participation from both learners and teachers.

Four houses bring colour and energy

Miss Khumalo from VCSS explained that, ”the school is divided into four inter-house teams, namely the Tigers, Lions, Cheetahs and Jaguars. Each house is represented by a colour — yellow, blue, green and red, adding energy and excitement to the day.”

Learners compete across track and field events

Learners competed in a variety of sporting codes, including track races for boys and girls in the under-15 and under-18 age groups. Events included the 1.5km race and the 100m sprint. Field events such as discus throw, javelin and shot put were also featured.

Khumalo noted that while many boys participated in the field events, the school aims to encourage more involvement from female learners in these sporting codes.

Lions crowned overall winners

The Lions, competing as the red team, were the overall winners of the day, with the blue team taking second place. Teachers also joined in the racing events, adding to the excitement and spirit of unity.

Day celebrates unity and school spirit

The sports day was described as a success, with healthy competition and strong school spirit displayed among both learners and educators.
