Filidi Secondary learner shines in district and provincial athletics

Amahle Mncube shines in athletics, excelling at circuit, district and provincial competitions.

Filidi Secondary School learner Amahle Mncube is passionate about athletics and is steadily making a name for herself in the world of athletes.

Rising through the athletics ranks

Her journey began when she participated in the school’s inter-house sports competition in February, where she performed well enough to qualify for the next round. Mncube then competed in the Bhekuzulu Circuit athletics meeting, where she took part in the 100m race and secured second place.

Her strong performance saw her level up to the district competition held in Ulundi, where she competed against learners from various clusters. Mncube delivered an impressive performance and claimed first place, once again qualifying to represent her school at provincial level.

Strong performance at provincial level

At the provincial competition held in Richards Bay, Mncube finished in a tie with another athlete, which resulted in a run-off race. She placed second in the final result. Unfortunately, she could not continue further in the competition due to unforeseen circumstances.

Despite this, Filidi Secondary School proudly celebrated her achievements. During the school’s morning assembly, Mncube was recognised for her performance and presented with a gift basket to honour her achievements.

Passion for running begins early

The shy but determined learner shared that her love for running began in primary school.

“I started running in primary school because I really love it. When I arrived in high school, I was disappointed that there was no athletics. In Grade 9 the sport was introduced and I immediately joined. Now I am in Grade 10 and I will continue running until I become a professional athlete one day.”

Gratitude for support

Mncube also expressed her gratitude to those who have supported her along the way. She thanked her siblings, Smangele and Nkululeko Mncube, for their constant encouragement at home. She also thanked her coach, Mndeni Shabangu, as well as the principal and educators of Filidi Secondary School for believing in her.

Coach praises athlete’s potential

Coach Shabangu, who is also an athlete and the chairperson of the school’s sports committee, said he is extremely proud of Mncube’s achievements.

“I am very proud of Amahle. She has done exceptionally well. We had very little training, but every time she stepped onto the field she amazed me. I wish her all the best and encourage her to remain respectful and focused on this God-given talent. She has the potential to achieve great things.”
