Newcastle bowlers fare well in masters’ competitions

The Newcastle Bowlers performed admirably on the greens and represented the town in the previous weekend's KZN Country Bowls Veteran Masters singles and KZNCB preliminary Masters tournaments.

The inaugural KZN Country Bowls Veteran Masters singles competition was hosted last weekend by the Newcastle Bowling Club.

The players chosen to participate in this important event included three bowlers from Volksrust, Tony de Pooter, Ben Coetzer, and Katy Osborne, and four bowlers from Newcastle, Joan Schoon, Edith Pretorius, James Dlamini, and Trevor Douthwaite.

The five rounds of sectional play were finished on Sunday morning despite a minor weather delay. The champions of the ladies’ section were Edith Pretorius (Newcastle BC) and Barbara Elworthy (Klipbank BC), while the men’s section included Gerhard Duvenage (Richards Bay BC) and Guy Kayhards (Empangeni BC).

Gerhard established an early lead in the men’s final, which he was able to hold on to win 21–12.

The women’s final followed a similar pattern, with Edith getting off to a strong start. Despite a spirited comeback by Barbara, Edith was too steady to emerge victorious with a score of 21–12, much to the pleasure of all the local fans.

The Newcastle club should be proud of the condition of their greens and the members’ willingness to volunteer their time to help out wherever they can. Special thanks go to all of the markers, who were greatly assisted by members of the Volksrust BC and the Ncandu Bowling Club.

The KZNCB preliminary Masters was also played last weekend with Klipbank Bowling Club in Ladysmith being the host club.

Once again Newcastle was well represented with Megan Redlinghuys, Mariska du Bruyn, Brandon Delport & Bennie van Vuuren being in the mix. We applaud these new members for their excellent results at the event, which allowed them to pick up invaluable experience.

With four wins and only four shots separating her from first place in her section, Mariska deserves praise for her performance.

In the men’s final, Jacques Bierbaum (Dundee BC) defeated Manny Brockman (Empangeni BC) 21–20 after mounting an incredible comeback from a 14–3 deficit.

Michelle Pretorious (Empangeni BC) and Heather Dirkson (Eshowe BC) competed in the ladies’ final, with Michelle emerging triumphant.

This weekend, all the action will be in Dundee, with the KZNCB Mixed Pairs Playoffs taking place on Thursday and Friday, and the Midlands, Northerns, and Zululand teams competing in the interzone competition on Saturday and Sunday.

Trevor Douthwaite and Edith Pretorius and John Douthwaite and Michelle Steele will compete against opponents from Zululand and the Midlands in the mixed pairs competition to determine who will represent KZNCB at the SA Mixed Pairs competition, which will be hosted by Newcastle BC in July.
