Wellness Wednesday: Are you meeting your own needs?

Meeting your own needs means nurturing all aspects of your well-being: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

In the relentless pace of modern life, where work, relationships, and responsibilities compete with a constant flood of information, it’s all too easy to lose sight of your own well-being.

Many people are so focused on meeting the needs of others that they forget to pause and ask themselves a simple but powerful question: Am I meeting my own needs?

When your needs go unmet, you may feel drained, irritable, disconnected, or simply “off”. But many of us push past these signals until they become too loud to ignore.

A regular wellness check-in can help you reconnect with yourself, assess how you’re doing, and make adjustments before burnout or emotional exhaustion sets in

How to do a personal wellness check-in:

  1. Set aside time weekly (or even daily) to quietly reflect. Journaling, meditating, or simply sitting in silence can help you tune in.
  2. Be honest with yourself and don’t shy away from discomfort. Sometimes the truth is that you’re not okay, and that’s okay. Awareness is the first step toward change.
  3. Determine the needs that are not being met. It might be rest, connection, alone time, or fun.

Zero in on what feels depleted. Once you have identified that, spend some time resting, having some time to be alone doing things you enjoy, connecting with friends, etc. Do whatever makes you feel replenished and rejuvenated.

  1. You don’t need a complete life overhaul. Start small and take steps daily. You can schedule a walk in the mornings or evenings, say no to unnecessary commitments that will tire and stress you out, ask for professional help or have a weekly talking session with your loved ones.
  2. Wellness is a moving target. What worked last month might not be enough this month. Keep checking in with yourself and make the necessary adaptations. What worked for you this month might not be what you need the following month.

So, the next time life gets busy as it does, pause and ask: Am I meeting my own needs?
