It’s that time of year again, when facial hair becomes a fad and mens’ cancer is brought into sharp focus – it’s Movember.
The point is simple: grow a mustache and raise awareness for a good cause.
The styles of mustache are totally up to the person, resulting in some comical and ingenious styles.
So with the options pretty much limitless, what can you do to get a magnificent mo?
If you’re a fan of politics, you can draw inspiration from numerous figures throughout the years who have had some fantastic facial hair.
United States President Abe Lincoln had iconic facial hair.
With a beard that inspired a nation, Honest Abe left behind legacy with his formidable facial hair.
While he may have inspired many, there have been others through the ages, whose mos may have been magnificent, but their personalities certainly weren’t…
Take Adolf Hitler for instance: his small but striking mustache is not often replicated due to its association with the German tyrant.
Then there was Stalin, who also grew a striking mustache, which made him look elegant and powerful… and we all know how that worked out…
More recently the likes of Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro proved that facial hair suits a man in power – a man who is not afraid to take what he wants.
Back in South Africa though, the facial hair fad hasn’t really caught on with politicians, apart from a few exceptions.
Those who have seen pictures of Paul Kruger will know that he had a big beard, and he was a commanding figure indeed.
Then there was Jay Naidoo, whose debonair mustache and goatee gave you the impression that he always knew something you didn’t.
More recently there’s the ‘silver fox’ look, as pulled off by Mac Maharaj.
As official spokesperson of the president of the country, Mac is always in the public eye and has to keep his mo well-styled.
While the South African man may not have much inspiration when it comes to facial hair fads, he can also just let the mo grow and take on the hobo look.
The hobo look is easy to pull off, needs no grooming and could also earn you a bit of cash if you get the appropriate attire.
It also could get you thrown out of a few functions. No matter what mo you grow this year, may it be legendary.
May it raise awareness; may it inspire others; and may it solidify your status as a Macho Man. So go on, ‘Grow a Mo, Bro’.
