Sir – The sad and bad news as reported in the Newcastle Advertiser (4 July 2014) regarding a decade if prostitution in the streets of Newcastle need to be addressed urgently by the SAPD with a complete new approach.
It is a lame and unacceptable excuse to tell the public that a clause in the Constitution state that professionals must be allowed to operate as such! It is an even bigger lame excuse to interpret that clause to infer that prostitutes are professional people. It is in fact a lie and a shameful lie for that matter!
A professional is a person operating from a legal and licensed premises and run by a person who is educated at an institution of higher education. He or she will therefore obtain a degree or diploma to indicate to the public that he or she is qualified.
No prostitute can claim that they received post matric education at a higher education institution! They are in fact party to the biggest health risk and problem face in Africa and that then AIDS and other venereal diseases!
Added to this problem is the consequences faced by residents and businesses in the immediate area where the prostitutes operate from. The prostitutes attract people with an immoral mind set and also other criminals.
We faced three housebreak cases within a year in this area. Two men were shot and killed in the immediate area where we live. I was assaulted by the clients of the prostitutes. These women even ignore police warnings that they must leave this street intersection.
This morning (Sunday, July 6) a man stood on this corner intentionally exposing his genitals. He said he was looking for the prostitutes. I told him to get lost before I assault or arrest him.
Clearly this will lead to more crime in this area. Does the SAPD have any intention to take action to curb such crime from spreading? These prostitutes are an insult to all women who have to walk past them. That as much as this man was an insult to me as a man.
I sincerely hope that the time for using excuses is over. Man alone, I cannot fight this very bad prostitution situation with the hope to bring it to an end. I think we need police action to stem this bad social behaviour completely out as unacceptable to all residents of Newcastle.
